INA Bearings: A 5-Step Checklist to Find the Right Part Fast (Even on a Rush)

If you're reading this because a production line is waiting on an INA bearing, you don't need a philosophical article about bearing design. You need a process. I've spent over a dozen years involved in bearing and linear motion sourcing, including 200+ rush orders for plants and OEMs. Here's the checklist I rely on when the clock is running.

This is not a generic "do your research" speech. It's five steps: identify the part, use the official INA bearings website and catalog, verify application conditions, check availability honestly, and confirm before you buy. Skip a step in a rush, and you'll likely pay for it twice.

Step 1: Identify what's actually installed

Sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how often we get a part number from a photo or a label that's half worn off. The number stamped on the bearing or linear guide is your best starting point, but only if you read all of it.

  • Clean the surface. Use magnification if needed.
  • Record the full INA part number, including every letter and number. A missing suffix can change the seal, cage, tolerance class, or preload.
  • Measure bore, OD, and width. For linear guides, also record rail length and hole pitch.
  • For linear actuators, record stroke, mounting dimensions, motor flange, and electrical interface.

It can induce shaft voltages that lead to bearing fluting and premature failure. In that case, the bearing spec isn't just about size; you may need an insulated bearing or a different internal design.

And here's the counterintuitive one: an exact replacement isn't always the right replacement. If the original bearing failed early, ordering the same part number doesn't fix the root cause. People think the bearing quality caused the failure. The reality is that application conditions usually cause the failure—alignment, lubrication, contamination, electrical current, or overloading. The bearing just paid the price. Matching the old part number blindly is how you get the same early failure.

Step 4: Check real availability and lead times

Now you know what you need. Next, find out what's actually in stock. The INA bearings website includes distributor locator tools, but authorized distributors don't all carry the same inventory. You have to ask the specific question: "Do you have this exact suffix in stock, and can you ship today?"

My rule after a few expensive near-misses: if the deadline is critical, ask about local pickup. An online order with "expedited" shipping is not the same as a distributor who hands you a box at lunchtime. To be fair, online ordering works fine for non-urgent needs. For rush repairs, phone calls and local stock checks beat e-commerce carts every time.

Step 5: Confirm before you buy

This should be obvious, but it's where I see the most errors. Before you send a PO or hit buy, run through a quick verification pass:
